January 14 – Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise the Philadelphia Union has been slapped with a temporary transfer ban by FIFA.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the world federation imposed a ban because of a late payment in a deal the Union made for José Riasco, a Venezuelan striker who plays for the club’s reserves.
Under FIFA rules for training compensation, Mineros de Guayana in Venezuela were entitled to $700, but by the time the money arrived at Mineros it was too late and the Union landed on FIFA’s transfer ban list in December last year.
Philadelphia are not the first MLS club to face a transfer ban, but it is expected the ban will be lifted soon. and
In a statement, FIFA said: “We can confirm that Philadelphia Union is currently prevented from registering new players in connection with the payment of an outstanding debt. The ban will be lifted once the payment has been confirmed by the creditor concerned.”
