The Tragic Accident

The devastating incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the 2100 block of Kirby Drive near San Felipe Street. Cole was driving a Lexus SUV northbound on Kirby Drive when he lost control while speeding. The vehicle crashed into a curb, flipped onto its roof, and struck a tree. Emergency responders had to cut open the vehicle to reach Cole and two other passengers.

The tragedy is compounded by the fact that there were two other people in the car at the time. While one passenger survived and is reportedly in stable condition at the hospital, Cole and another occupant did not survive. Adding insult to injury, it appears all parties involved had been at a party prior to the accident.

Cole Kelly was born in Sugar Land, Texas, and grew up in a close-knit, active family. His parents, both former college athletes from Iowa, instilled in him a strong work ethic that would become a defining characteristic throughout his life.

From a young age, Cole demonstrated a passion for baseball that would shape his future. He spent countless hours playing in his yard and eventually joined the Fort Bend Texans baseball team in 2007. Over the years, Cole became a key member of the team, contributing to its success almost every year.

  • He attended Austin High School in 2012 and joined the freshman team as a starter, wearing jersey No. 9.
  • In 2014, he was promoted to the varsity team, where his team placed third in the district, and he earned All-District Honorable Mention.

After retiring from playing in 2014, Cole transitioned into coaching. From May 2015 to August 2017, he served as a coach for the Fort Bend Texans. This transition showcased Cole’s dedication to baseball and his ability to share his knowledge with younger players.
