Match Day 19: Christmas hangover slows Premier League attendances

January 7 – The Premier League kicked off 2025 with a below-average attendance week, recording 97.12% capacity across its ten matches—marking a notable drop from the consistent 98%+ averages seen during the festive period.

Aston Villa and Brighton were the standouts, both hitting the coveted 99% capacity mark. Villa’s late-game heroics in their dramatic win over Leicester were witnessed by a 99.4% strong crowd at Villa Park, while Brighton’s packed Amex Stadium (99%) saw them hold Arsenal to another hard-fought draw, mirroring their earlier encounter this season.

Tottenham hosted Newcastle in front of Match Day 19’s largest turnout, but Spurs fans left disappointed as their side fell narrowly to the Magpies.

The marquee clash of the week, though, came at Anfield as league leaders Liverpool hosted an out-of-form Manchester United in an entertaining match which ended 2-2. Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to have one foot already planted in Madrid, where he has been hotly linked in recent weeks, but he looked extremely vulnerable in defence and wasteful in attack as his side struggled to keep United at bay.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Wolverhampton Wanderers posted the week’s lowest turnout, with Molineux filling just 93.41% of its seats. They were joined by Manchester City (95.89%), Fulham (94.88%), and Southampton (95.73%) as clubs falling below the 97% mark.

Man City’s attendance struggles continue despite back-to-back wins, including a dominant 4-1 display against West Ham and a solid 2-0 victory over Leicester which you’d think would instil some match-going enthusiasm back into the fans.

As the season progresses, clubs will hope to reinvigorate fan turnout and return to the near-sellout crowds that have characterised much of this campaign so far.
