The 2024 MLS season has been transformative for the Portland Timbers and their Brazilian maestro, Evander.
Under first-year head coach Phil Neville, the Timbers ended their playoff drought, reaching the postseason for the first time since 2021. Their resurgence was fueled by an explosive offense that stood out in a league boasting top talents like Lionel Messi with Inter Miami, Luciano Acosta with FC Cincinnati, Cucho Hernández with Columbus Crew, and Riqui Puig with the LA Galaxy.
At the heart of it all was Evander, the team’s centerpiece, whose remarkable performances earned him a place among the Landon Donovan MLS MVP candidates. Evander delivered an astounding 33 goal contributions—15 goals and 18 assists—cementing his status as one of the league’s most dynamic players.
However, well before his move to North America, Evander enjoyed growing up around the vibrant culture of Brazilian soccer.
“As a kid, I used to watch Ronaldinho a lot,” he shared. “He was the number 10, dribbling a lot, scoring some nice goals, making the game feel more enjoyable, and also doing some magic—like my style of play.”
Ronaldinho’s influence is evident in Evander’s game, characterized by flair, creativity, and an eye for the spectacular. “If you have the quality to do it, you have to do it,” he said, emphasizing his belief in the artistry of soccer—a philosophy that aligns with the Brazilian tradition of playing with joy and passion.
At just 12-years-old, Evander had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet his idol, Ronaldinho. His uncle, who worked for the legendary playmaker, introduced the two. The encounter was brief but unforgettable.
“That was crazy,” Evander recalled. “We took a picture in the middle of the house, and then I just went back outside to play soccer with my friends.”
Years later, Evander’s uncle secured him the chance to play in a charity match alongside Ronaldinho. While his club, Midtjylland, ultimately didn’t allow him to participate, the experience remains a cherished highlight. “The opportunity will be there [once more]. I just have to get it,” he said with optimism.
Evander’s professional journey began at Vasco da Gama, a club he joined as a young boy and represented for 11 years. His time there was foundational, shaping both his game and his competitive nature.
“After 11 years, you become a professional player for the same club. There is some kind of history, some kind of drive for everything,” he explained. “I feel really pleased with the things the club has done for me and also the opportunity they gave me to become a professional player for the club.”
“When you start playing soccer, especially in Brazil, they already put a lot of pressure on you,” he added. “We learn there’s no space to be a loser.”
That relentless drive to win became a defining aspect of his character and his approach to the game.
At Vasco, Evander became the youngest player in the club’s history to score twice in a Copa Libertadores match, a milestone that cemented his status as one of Brazil’s brightest young talents at the time. Those formative years laid the groundwork for his transition to European soccer, where he joined Danish side Midtjylland before his eventual move to MLS.
With his success in Portland, Evander is already leaving a lasting impression on the Rose City. But when asked about the legacy he hopes to leave, the MVP candidate spoke with ambition and clarity.
“I want to leave a great legacy. I want to do everything I can and play in big competitions where I can reach my full potential,” he said. “I played in the Champions League for Midtjylland, but I want to compete with opportunities to win. I want to join a bigger club, win many titles, and be a true winner. At the end of my career, I want to say, ‘I gave everything, earned these trophies, and left my mark.’ I hope everyone remembers my name.”
Evander’s 2024 season is a testament to his talent and determination. As he continues to shine on the MLS stage, his dreams of competing at the highest level seem well within reach. For now, Portland fans can savor the brilliance of their Brazilian star, knowing he’s driven by a deep desire to make his mark both on and off the field.
Possibly one day, we may see Evander and Ronaldinho finally share the pitch together in Portland for a charity match, completing a full-circle moment in Evander’s journey.
