Chelsea news gossip: Araujo – Matos

Here is a roundup of the top Chelsea news, gossip and transfer latest from icfootballnews that we think you guys may have missed…

CHELSEA have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Ronald Araujo, with the defender ‘prioritising’ a move to the Premier League should he decide to leave Barcelona this January or at the end of the season.

Araujo has made over 150 appearances in all competitions for Barca since joining from Uruguayan outfit Boston River for a fee of just £1.5million back in 2017, and has firmly established himself as a regular at the heart of the club’s defence.

A serious hamstring problem meant Araujo missed the first half of this season and he made his long-awaited return in Barca’s 4-0 victory over Barbastro in the Copa del Rey last weekend, but there has been reports that he is one player that could be moved on.

Barcelona are struggling financially and have been linked with selling a number of players in order to help balance the books, and keep players at the club that they really want to build a future with.

The La Liga giants would be reluctant to accept a loan deal this winter but ‘will not close the door’ on a permanent transfer should they receive a ‘very considerable and irresistible’ offer, according to Mundo Deportivo,

The report states that Araujo has been open with his team-mates in the Barcelona dressing room that he is strongly considering a January move – and if he does depart, he will prioritise a move to England.

Chelsea have had some issues at the back this season and look like a side that need to delve into that transfer kitty and add an experienced star like Ronaldo Araujo.

Araujo would be a quality signing, but he is a player that CHELSEA may not end up getting the player as he seems very happy at Barcelona, despite the reports in the media this weekend

LUCY WATSON DEAL DONE

Lucy Watson has returned to CHELSEA from a loan spell at Southampton and will now spend the remainder of the 2024/25 season with Ipswich Town in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division.

The Blues posted on the club website: ‘The 21-year-old forward spent the first half of the season with the Saints where she made two appearances in the League Cup.

‘She will now spend the rest of the campaign on loan with the Tractor Girls, who currently sit top of the third tier with 29 points after 11 games played.

‘In the summer of 2022, Watson joined the Blues from Sheffield United where she had racked up an impressive amount of experience since making her debut at only 16 years old.

‘After penning her first deal at Chelsea, the forward saw a loan with Charlton Athletic cut short due to sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury which kept her sidelined until the 2023/24 season, which she spent in the Championship with Crystal Palace.

‘On the international stage, Watson has featured for England across U-17s to U-19s level and represented the Young Lionesses at the 2022 UEFA Women’s Under-19 European Championship in the Czech Republic.

‘Everyone at CHELSEA would like to wish Lucy every success during her time at Ipswich and we look forward to watching her progress during the rest of the season.’

Watson needs to play on a regular basis and this loan move is a great one for the star to make as sitting on the bench for the Blues is simply not good enough.

Watson will surely get some much needed minutes for the remainder of the season

ALEX MATOS MAKES JANUARY MOVE

CHELSEA midfielder Alex Matos will spend the remainder of the season on loan at Championship side Oxford United, the Blues have confirmed on the club website this weekend.

The Blues posted on the club website: ‘Matos joined the Blues from Norwich City in the summer of 2023 and made his first-team debut as a substitute against Fulham the following October.

‘The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Huddersfield Town, where he made 20 appearances, and returns to the English second tier to continue his development.

‘Good luck, Alex!’

Ed Waldron, Head of Oxford Football Operations, said: “Alex’s talent has been evident since his time with Norwich City, and watching him develop at Huddersfield Town last season showcased he is ready to compete at this level.

“We have built a strong relationship with Chelsea over the last few years, and we have developed a reputation over that time as a place where talented young players can flourish.

“To have the opportunity for Alex to continue his development here showcases the trust that CHELSEA and other Premier League clubs hold in Oxford United, which is fantastic as we benefit in bringing a top professional and quality player into our building. Now, we look forward to watching his progress across the season.”

Matos is very talented but with all that quality that Chelsea have in the attack under Enzo Maresca, he will never get the chance to prove himself in the coming seasons, it will not be possible.

This loan move is perfect for the lad because if he impresses, he may impress a number of clubs to maybe get a permanent move away from the Blues, because as we just said, he may not get the chance in that Chelsea first team
