Inzaghi lauds Inter resilience after overcoming Supercoppa Italiana defeat

Simone Inzaghi lauded his Inter side’s resilience in their Serie A victory over Venezia on Sunday, a triumph that moved them up to second in the league table.

The result came just six days after their Supercoppa Italiana final defeat to rivals AC Milan, with Matteo Darmian’s 16th-minute strike enough to seal the win.

The Nerazzurri have now won their last six consecutive away league games without conceding a goal for the first time in the club’s illustrious 115-year history.

And they were worthy of their win, having registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.9 from their 17 shots, compared to Venezia’s measly 0.38 from their seven efforts.

Inzaghi, however, acknowledged that his side needed to be more clinical in front of goal, with a number of spurned chances almost punished late on by Gianluca Busio, who curled an effort against the post.

“If we analyse the second half, all our moves could’ve come to a second goal and when you don’t kill the game off, it stays open, especially with great Stankovic saves,” Inzaghi told DAZN.

“It was not simple, but we won and that is what we wanted. It wasn’t easy for us after losing the final in that way. The boys were great, we came here tired, and we played a great game.”

Inter return to Serie A action on Wednesday when they take on Bologna, but Inzaghi revealed he could be without several players due to injuries.

The likes of Hakan Calhanoglu, Francesco Acerbi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all missed Inter’s win over Venezia.

“We’ll have to talk to the medical staff. There is a little hope for Calhanoglu and Acerbi, while (Henrikh) Mkhitaryan will be evaluated tomorrow,” he said.

“The positive is we have Benjamin Pavard back, who had not played for a long time.”

Inzaghi also said that Davide Frattesi remained part of the club’s plans moving forward, despite reports suggesting a move to Roma, Napoli and Tottenham could happen.

Frattesi has made 23 appearances across all competitions for Inter this season, though only eight have been from the start.

“I am counting on Davide and he is very much involved in this project,” Inzaghi said.

“He has been working hard and without Mkhitaryan’s injury, he probably would’ve started today. He has given us so much satisfaction.

“I realise he probably wants more playing time, but we are happy with him and want to continue with him.”
