Fifty countries voted in elections in 2024 – a year that also brought extreme global weather events, continued fighting in Ukraine and the Middle East, and rioting across the UK.

Throughout the year, photographers have managed to capture stunning and shocking images – from extraordinary political moments to natural wonders.

Here we take a look back at this year in pictures.

The "rollercoaster of emotions" in the 12 months since the felling of the tree has veered from "hopelessness and grief" to the joyful stories about "just what the tree meant to so many", according to the National Trust. The Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, on display in the skies above The Kissing Trees near Kinghorn in Fife. Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
